Bespoke Choking Training | Safety First Welling

I was asked to deliver some bespoke choking training for the team involved in the care of an adult with an increased risk of choking and dysphagia (Difficulty Swallowing)

The staff had received first aid training but the case manager wanted to provide some extra skills training for the team and the family tailored to the client specifically.

Location: London

Budget: £175

Project Start: March 9, 2022

Project Completed: March 16, 2022

  • Increased risk of choking

Due to a previous accident the client had been left needing full time care.  He was  at increased risk of choking due to dysphagia and while everyone was following the guidelines on his diet and fluid intake it was still a concern.

Following his own personal care plan and the resus council guidelines on choking I was able to highlight to those caring from him when to seek help and how to manage should he choke

This helped to reassure all those working with him on a daily basis with the practical session being of particular benefit to the team.

  • A bespoke training session

Initially I received a request for Emergency First Aid at Work training.  This then progressed into more specific training for choking.

The first step was to liaise with the professionals who have been working closely with the client over the course of his journey in the community.  I accessed the care plan which was specifically for him, and designed my training session around this.

I liaised with the team leader to decide on a date and time for the training.  I then attended the venue at a time and date to suit everyone.

I also managed to involve the client in the session towards the end of the session, in a way that was appropriate and respectful to him.  This was beneficial to everyone as it took a skill into context.

I delivered an hour and a half long training session which allowed the family and staff to ask any questions in a relaxed manner and also to practice vital life saving skills.

  • The Results

The verbal feedback from the session was positive.

The client’s wife felt more comfortable with the possibility of managing an emergency situation which could happen at any point in time.

She said she felt clearer about when to call for help and as he was present in the room towards the end of the session it helped her to put it all into context.

Staff were clearer on when to  seek medical intervention aside from at the immediate time of the emergency.
