Accidents in the home are a big risk to children under the age of 5. Whether it is falls, burns or poisoning children are explorers by nature and the house is full of adventures.
They need to be supervised at all times as far as possible, and most people will take measures to toddler proof their home at some point. Check out my post on this subject here toddler proof their home.
Bath time is no different. It poses two major risks to small children. They are at risk of drowning and also getting burnt. Close supervision of both babies and small children is absolutely essential for their safety during bath time. It can get a bit monotonous and things can happen to distract focus so try to enjoy this time where possible.
Children can drown in a couple of cm of water. you shouldn’t leave a child unattended even for a minute to fold the washing or answer the phone.
Bath seats can tip over and submerge children so keep an eye on them when they are in the bath seat.
If they do go under get them out of the bath and consider seeking medical advice in case they have inhaled some water.
There have been incidents of young children getting burnt when getting in the bath where boilers have failed for example.
To make sure the bath is the correct temperature run the cold water first and then top it up with hot. Test the temperature with your arm or hand before putting the children in.
There are now bath thermometers on the market if you want to investigate further.
Bath time is a must for every child at some point. Instead of worrying about the chores try to enjoy bath time when they are little, that time will soon pass. Let the children have fun, splash, play games and even tell stories. Just make sure you are present when they are in the water all it takes is a minute of distraction for accidents to happen.
