September is fast approaching with pupils returning to a new school year and along with September comes the busiest month of the year for hospital admissions for asthma. Does your child have asthma and / or anaphylaxis?
When retuning to school it is really important to make sure your child's care plan is up to date as well as any medication they need. Asthma UK have a downloadable action plan on their website.
Inhalers often end up at the bottom of bags full of dust so that when they are needed they either can't be found or they are not working particularly well.
Do their care plans need an update? Asthma UK have a useful downloadable asthma action plan. Why not check it out?
Is their inhaler up to date?
Is their auto injector in date as well?
Schools have a responsibility for looking after your child's medical needs, but they do need to have up to date medication to do so.
Refreshing your child's inhaler technique and making sure they know how to administer their epi pen is vital. Often young people come into hospital with poor or inaccurate inhaler technique.
If they are nervous about using their epi pen they may not use it in an emergency.
Just check in with them to make sure everything is ok
Sometimes it can be useful to check whether their teacher knows for your peace of mind
Often young people can find managing a medical condition a bit overwhelming and it doesn’t need to be.
It is important to keep an eye on how they are getting on to make sure they stay safe.
We run regular first aid courses where we discuss how to manage asthma and anaphylaxis. To find out more get in touch and book a course today.
